Breastfeeding Mum Told To Cover Up And She Did
Quick news flash for all you prudes out there: women have breasts. I know, it’s unfathomable, right? And guess what, a lot of them use them to feed their babies.
Welcome to 2018 and if you can’t grasp that concept maybe you should crawl back into the cave you came out of. I find it odd in this day and age there are men out there who are still uncomfortable at the site of a woman breastfeeding. And I’m a man!
Unsurprisingly, security in the Vatican isn’t big on mothers breastfeeding in public either:
I would’ve thought that with everything going on in the world right now a woman’s right to breastfeed her child would be the least of anyone’s concerns, especially in the United States. But lo and behold, there are men in America who still find time to moan about women breastfeeding in public and demand they cover up.
A recent case of this happening took place in Honolulu, Hawaii, when a man confronted a mother who was breastfeeding her child at a restaurant. The unknown male asked the woman (who hasn’t been named either) to cover up and she kindly obliged… by throwing a tablecloth over her head.
Fair play to her, the man asked her to cover up but he wasn’t specific about which part.
The moment was captured by Carol Lockwood, who knew the mother in question, and she posted it on her Facebook with a caption which reads:
A friend’s daughter-in-law was told to “cover up” while feeding her baby, so she did! I’ve never met her, but I think she’s AWESOME!!!
Carol’s post has gone on to receive over 65k likes, 16k comments and 200k shares since being posted on July 30.
As well as praising the ‘AWESOME’ mother, Carol added:
I’m SO over people shaming women for nursing!!!
She also points out the man approached the mother in ‘extremely humid’ 90-degree weather conditions.
On July 15, swimsuit model Mara Martin received mixed reactions when she walked down the runway at Sports Illustrated’s Miami Swim Week fashion show.
Martin boldly walked down the catwalk in a golden, one-shouldered bikini piece while breastfeeding her five-month-old baby.
If the intention was to make a statement I’d say ‘mission accomplished’, as those in attendance, as well as on Instagram, hailed her move as inspiring. She had the full support of the SI staff too after they uploaded footage of the ‘Sweet 16 finalist’ walking down the runway with her baby in tow.
After the show, Mara took to Instagram to say:
Wow! WHAT A NIGHT! Words can’t even describe how amazing I feel after being picked to walk the runway for @si_swimsuit. Anyone who knows me, knows it has been a life long dream of mine.
I can’t believe I am waking up to headlines with me and my daughter in them for doing something I do every day. It is truly so humbling and unreal to say the least.
I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!
However, Mara points out her walking down the runway while breastfeeding her baby ‘shouldn’t be a headline’.
Unfortunately in 2018, it appears it is.
