10 Women Who Could Win Best Actress Oscar in 2019
Who’s going to win the Best Actress Oscar in 2019? Is it going to be an industry veteran like Frances McDormand or is it going to be an ingénue like Jennifer Lawrence? Well, we won’t know the answer to that question anytime soon, but there’s no harm in making intelligent guesses. Lately Best Actress races have been much more competitive than Best Actor. That might actually be good sign — Hollywood finally realizing importance of telling female-centric movies. This year, just like last, is looking very good for women-centric films and as a result we might yet again see a very crowded Best Actress field. Here’s the list of 10 women who are most likely to win Best Actress Oscar (or at least win the nomination) next year.
10. Melissa McCarthy, ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’
Melissa McCarthy has transformed herself for the role. With an award-friendly release date, she might land herself in the good books of the Academy members.
9. Nicole Kidman, ‘Destroyer’
Nicole Kidman as a leading LAPD detective. What more do you need? Kidman has had a career resurgence of sorts with films like ‘Lion’ and tv shows like ‘Big Little Lies’. So, it will be interesting to see if that resurgence continues with ‘Destroyer’.
8. Keira Knightley, ‘The Aftermath’
Keira Knightley in period drama? Sign me in! She is without question the “go to” actress for period pieces. And the reason is quite simple: She oozes an old-world elegance missing in most of the modern age actresses. I hope the film does justice to her talent.
7. Penélope Cruz, ‘Everybody Knows’
Asghar Farhadi has stamped his mark on modern cinema through his evocative Academy-winning duo of films set in the milieu of Iran, namely ‘A Separation’ and ‘The Salesman’. This time though he is at the helm of a Spanish psychological drama with Penelope Cruz playing the central protagonist. Be ready for some fireworks.
6. Lady Gaga, ‘A Star is Born’
Here’s my prediction. If ‘A Star is Born’ turns out to be good, Lady Gaga will at least secure a nomination, if not a win. Hollywood loves superstars. They don’t care in what form they come.
