We previously reported that four Game of Thrones spin-offs are in the works but that number could now be five.

There has long been a rumour five prequels are in the works thanks to comments from author George R.R. Martin announcing it his blog.

He said:

We had four scripts in development when I arrived in LA [earlier in May], but by the time I left we had five.

Now, HBO has finally confirmed this news making it pretty certain we won’t see the end of GOT for a while yet.

According to Entertainment Weekly, GOT‘s co-executive producer Bryan Cogman is writing a drama series that will be a prequel like all the other spin-offs.

Cogman has been developing the project closely with Martin meaning this must be the one he was referring to in his blog.

Having been involved with GOT since the first series, Cogman is the best man for the job and has already proven his writing talent with episodes Stormborn and The Laws of Gods and Men.

George R.R. Martin is pretty chuffed with the choice of Cogman saying on his blog:

Bryan Cogman has surely been the Prince of Dragonstone.

Bryan’s series will be an adaptation, and one that will thrill most fans of the books, I think, set during a very exciting period of Westerosi history.

And I’ll be working with him every step of the way.

Little is known yet about this series and the other projects that are in development but Martin has ruled out tackling Robert’s Rebellion or the tales of Dunk and Egg.

We also know that the prequels won’t involve any members of the current cast.

Of course none of these television projects are guaranteed to air, but since GOT is massive we are pretty certain one or two will make it to our screens.

We will have to wait for these series though as HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys has emphasised right now the number one priority is series eight of the hit show.

Bloys commented:

I don’t want to do anything with a spin-off or anything that detracts or distracts from that.

What I don’t want is the attention to be drawn from the final season, which I think is going to be epic and amazing and somehow have the distraction of a new Game of Thrones airing right after that.

It’s best to separate it and that’s what we’ll do.

Since the last series may not air ’til 2019, it could be a long wait until 2020 to see a spin-off on our screens.

Good things come to those who wait.
